The History of Gartmore - Present Day

The three traditional areas of employment, farming forestry and the water authority are still important but are no longer the big employers of local labour that they were.

Gartmore is increasingly a commuter area. Now many people travel to Glasgow, Stirling and beyond. Many regularly travel further afield within Scotland and to England. A few regularly travel abroad with a minority working abroad for extended periods whilst maintaining a base in Gartmore.

Today, Gartmore has its own curling pond and the present Summer Ice table was installed in the Village Club in 1895. A circulating library, housed in the Reading Room, was gifted to the village by a firm of Glasgow merchants, J. & A. McDonald.

The Gartmore Village Shop is a convenience store that sells groceries, off-licence beverages, newspapers and pharmaceutical products, as well as providing post-office facilities. The community has run the shop since January 1998. The previous owners wanted to sell the property with the possibility of a residential development. However, the local people were concerned about the possible loss of the village shop and set up a committee to explore their options. A feasibility study was carried out by 8 people from the sub-committee to canvas local opinion on the community-purchase of the shop. Of the 250 adult villagers, 130 subsequently bought shares in a community co-operative.

The children’s playpark is behind the Village Club which overlooks the Square.

The Square is an open area planted with rosebeds and heathers around the War Memorial erected in memory of 22 young men from the village killed in the two World Wars.

The name "Cayzer Court" has been given to a small development of Modern Houses opposite the football pitch.
